In broad brush terms, the point of RT is to report on problems with democracy and capitalism, so that abuses of power that occur in Western

countries seem just like the abuses of power in Russia. So, how dare America criticise Russian police beating up protestors and journalists when similar things happen in the US? Or how dare the West criticise Russian expropriation of its oil and gas industry and putting it in the hands of government cronies when all the big Western banks are involved in dodgy financial practices, and protected by the government? It's there to undermine our support of our own institutions and enable the people in power in Russia to carry on doing whatever they want.

The difference between America particularly and Russia, is that in America reporting of these abuses generally comes with a message of "how can this happen, we can do better, and this needs to be fixed". While in Russia, the message "this is the way the world is. That's why we need a strong, authoritarian government".

Plus, Western countries generally have strong institutions - a free press, the court system, accountability in government - that bring these problems to light and give them a greater chance of being solved. I'm not saying the system is perfect or operates perfectly, but it's not the same as Russia, which doesn't have an independent court system or media, and where alternative views are squelched.

Anyway, that's why I'm always cautious of anything RT says, and always look for an alternative source to whatever they're saying. The HSX boards rule of "post the original source" works well, (and in this case the original source was NBC)
