Two things:
Saw Amelie today. I don't know how many times I've seen it in the theater at this point. But time has done nothing to diminish the emotional power of the film. The movie crushes me every time; today was no different. The movie is just perfect in every way. All the incredible details that just build and build. The cinematography is just great, and the music is perfectly married to the story. The movie is a kind of miracle to me. I just love it so. It has to be in my top 10 films of the 21st Century. There are very few films that have such an unabashed joy AND sadness within them. The movie is incredible. The emotional power behind it remind me of films like The Wizardof Oz, or Babe. Overwhelming.
And: I saw it at the Frida Cinema, deep in the heart of Santa Ana, CA. If you live in SoCal then perhaps you know what a treasure this movie theater is. And if not, let me just say it's a real blessing to have a place like this so close to home. For us, it's about 15-20 minutes away. And it's unlike any other theater around here. Run by volunteers, this place is movie lovers headquarters. It's a two screen theater, it's a non profit, and it absolutely rules. When you just look at their monthly calendar, you've got to be sitting down because you'll immediately get weak in the knees. I feel so lucky that this place exists.
