Try using cursor keys not mouse to select them
I think what's happening is that when your mouse moves over the drop-down list, it triggers an event in Javascript which closes the 'My Portfolio' menu.
When I use cursor/arrow (up/down) keys after clicking into the symbol box, I can highlight the symbol from the auto-complete list and press TAB and it closes the autocomplete, and leave the selected symbol in the trade box.
See if that work-around helps.
