Answer... (remastered)

Posted by: AFRAM The African-American Fund (a.k.a AFRAMFund) on Dec 20, 04:57 in response to bface's post Question about KNIV2 delist price.

From the Glossary (footer of every HSX page):

CASH-OUT PRICE

This is the price in which HSX cashes out MovieStocks and options. A MovieStock is cashed out at H$1 to $1 million equal to the movie's domestic box-office gross on the first business day after its first four weekends of wide release or after the first 12 weekends of limited release. The HSX source for box-office is Exhibitor Relations Co. If ERC does not report box-office for a film, alternate sources may be used.

KNIV2 was supposed to go straight to Netflix and in that case it would be cashed out/delisted at $0.  In the past, Netflix has released a few of its original projects/straight to Netflix in theaters for small or special screenings for things like.... to be qualified for Academy Awards, because Netflix purchased the project from another company and there was already a contract in place that required some kind of theatrical release, etc.  In these cases, the project would count as being released theatrically, but would be delisted/ cashed out at $0.01 to record that the project was released in theaters but did not report box office.

The third option for cashing out/delisting is "alternate sources" (usually BOM Box Office Mojo).  Some movies open in strange release styles and do not report box office thru the normal channels or in the normal way.  Some examples would be...  foreign movies from foreign companies that are shown in a small amount of theaters for a small amount of time that usually do not report box office but do make money and it is reported in the news because it was a hit but is not reported thru normal industry channels (like ERC).  This is common with Indian and Latin movies that only open for one week in several theaters and make big box office because the audience treats these movies as event movies and know they will only be available for a week (or a weekend).  Another example that has happened in the past in a movie only opening in one or a few theaters and box office is not reported thru normal channels but box office reporting sites (like BOM, the numbers, etc) contact the theater or theaters directly to get a number, or the box office site has a relationship with somebody involved with the project (like a director) and gets the numbers from them and reports it on their site.

For KNIV2 specifically, (from Wiki):

"Release[edit]

Glass Onion premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2022.[1][18][43] It also screened at the Philadelphia Film Festival in October 2022, closed both the BFI London Film Festival on October 16, 2022, and Film Fest 919 on October 30, 2022[44][45] and screened the Miami International Film Festival as its opening night film on November 3, 2022.[46] It will be released on Netflix on December 23, 2022.[47][7]

Netflix was reportedly considering a new release model for films like Glass Onion, which would give the film a 45-day window in theaters before being released on the streaming service.[48] On October 6, 2022, Netflix announced that after signing deals with the three largest theater chains in the United States (AMC TheatersRegal Cinemas, and Cinemark, the latter of whom Netflix had a pre-existing deal with), the film would see a very limited one-week theatrical release (billed as a "sneak preview" release) from November 23 to 29, 2022, in roughly 600 theaters in the largest markets across the United States as well in other international markets, marking the first time a Netflix-distributed film would be shown in all three major theater chains in the United States. After the release is over, Netflix would then pull the film from distribution until the Netflix release on December 23..."

from Deadline (link)
Over the 5-day Thanksgiving stretch, Netflix’s one-week sneak preview of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery buried all new and old major studio adult counterprogramming with an estimated $13.3M over 5-days

A 13.28 figure was listed and reported on BOM.

Netflix isn't releasing official numbers, as per the usual, but estimates have GLASS ONION grossing upwards of $13M in 600 theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Netflix released a movie but did not report official numbers (thru official channels) but the box office was reported in the media (because this was rare for Netflix to release theatrically, for it to be a hit, and for Netflix to stupidly limit the release and not make tons of theater cash).

HSX chose to cash out/delist KNIV2 using the "alternate" sources number of 13.3

Starbonds are only adjusted for movies that report box office to ERC.  If no official box office is reported, starbonds are removed/detached from the project and do not adjust for the project. (The starbonds that were attached to KNIV2 will not adjust, they will be removed).

A valuable tip... spend five minutes each day and scan the HSX Boards and check all the posts since the last time you logged in.  There have been many posts specifically about the KNIV2 situation

Just a reminder for today...JHFHockeyDec 19, 05:28

BOM has posted Glass Onion numbers, and in the past, movies with a gross on BOM delist at that price. Starbonds won't. {nm}bsbbtnhNov 28, 06:21

What we need to know is just whether you will take their numbers for delist or not? {nm}TallwonderNov 28, 07:59

Yes, those numbers have been used in the past.AntibodyNov 28, 08:20
