Following the huge success of 1996's Jerry Maguire, writer-director Cameron Crowe (Say Anything, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Singles) takes a semi-autobiographical look at the former world of classic rock. Set in 1973, the film chronicles a 15-year-old named William, who is given the opportunity to follow his favorite up-and-coming band for a Rolling Stone article. As William goes on tour with the band despite his mother's wishes, he learns that families are not only inherited, but they are also created. William will be played by newcomer Patrick Fugit, whose previous credit is a 1998 television movie.
Crowe began his writing career as a Rolling Stone journalist in 1975, following bands like Led Zeppelin when he was just 17. Once known as the Untitled Cameron Crowe Project, the movie has also been known as Stillwater, among many others, before finally settling on Almost Famous. Jason Lee, Fairuza Balk, Anna Paquin, Billy Crudup and Kate Hudson also star in this 1970's rock n' roll story.
