Set in Mexico City, Amores Perros (Dog's Love) is a violent film that centers on dogfights. The film shows dog-fighting rings that, based on one's interpretation, parallel human life on the streets of the city. The dog fighting is used as a backdrop for three storylines. The stories converge to recount a car accident that takes place during the films opening. Similar to Pulp Fiction, interlocking lives and time loops are central to understanding the film.
The first story takes a hard, low-life realistic approach. A teenage mother is approached by her husband's younger brother. The impoverished young woman listens to his proposal to enter his dog in the fight. The second story departs from the first story in that it tells a moral tale. The story centers on a middle-aged couple who move into a luxury flat with their pampered pooch. The dog disappears under the floorboards of the apartment. In the final story, a terrorist turned hitman prepares for his latest mission that center on a dog-fighting ring. Differing from both the first and second stories, the third is setup as a psychological thriller.
Director Alejandra Gonzalez Inarritu and writer Guillermo Arriaga Jordon effectively combine three genres into one coherent film. The film is a Mexican box-office hit and winner of the Cannes Critics Week Prize. Lion's Gate will distribute the film in 2001.
