The machinations of a working class family who refuse to leave their home to make way for an airport expansion provide the basis for this low-budget comedy from the same team responsible for "Frontline," a popular Australian TV show.
The story takes place in Melbourne and the Kerrigans love living next to the airport.
Dad is a tow truck driver with limited horizons; Mum delights her family with creative cooking; Wayne is in prison for armed robbery; Steve is obsessed with buying and selling useless junk; Dale, the narrator of the film, is a bit simple-minded; and Tracey represents the only family member to have received a diploma in cosmetology.
The action turns on Dad's decision to hire an attorney who, proving to be incompetent, is replaced by a retired barrister, who unaccountably offers to help the beleaguered family free of charge.
An audience sensation at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, The Castle was Australia's highest grossing native film in 1997.
