Lasse Hallstrom directs this romantic comedy based on the novel by Joanne Harris which takes place in 1959 in a rural French town. The story of Chocolat centers on a mysterious woman who moves to town and opens a chocolate shop across the street from the church. In no time, social order is turned upside-down in a variety of funny and romantic interludes. The town priest views chocolate as a sin and begins to see his power threatened by the success of the chocolate shop.
Juliette Binoche stars as the chocolate shop owner with Johnny Depp playing her love interest. Lena Olin, Dame Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, Carrie-Anne Moss, Leslie Caron, and John Wood are also part of the stellar cast.
Chocolat marks Hallstrom's follow-up to '99s The Cider House Rules, which earned a Best Picture and Best Director nomination. Hallstrom, who also directed such films as Once Around, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and My Life As A Dog, will turn his attention in 2001 to the drama The Shipping News with Kevin Spacey starring.
