A romantic comedy about a sexy twenty-something who, while pursuing her dream of becoming a songwriter, gets work at a rowdy, female run bar which becomes a New York City hotspot. The bar, called "The Coyote Ugly Saloon," only hires barmaids with the ability to ruffle their predominantly male clientele's feathers. Disney acquired the rights to the 1997 magazine article which appeared in GQ entitled "The Muse of the Coyote Ugly Saloon," which was a confessional about work at the real-life saloon in the East Village.
While this film is an abrupt departure from Bruckenheimer's usual action/blockbuster fare like Enemy of the State and Armageddon, he still knows how to engender publicity as he conducts a nation-wide search for the lead role with open casting calls. Also, a re-write by Kevin Smith is in keeping with the high profile of this project. Smith turned down the opportunity to direct citing his desire to direct only material he originates. Directed by David McNally, the film stars Tyra Banks, Piper Perabo, Maria Bello and John Goodman.
