David Mamet is one of the most celebrated playwright-screenwriters of our time. The writer, known for his rhythmic, back-and-forth dialogue, actually uses a metronome during rehearsals to pace his actors' delivery. Early success for Mamet the screenwriter can be found in extrordinary films like The Verdict in 1982 -- which starred Paul Newman -- and The Postman Always Rings Twice with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange in 1981. In 1986, his play Sexual Perversity in Chicago was turned into a popular film starring Rob Lowe and Demi Moore called About Last Night. In 1987, Mamet served on the screenwriting team behind The Untouchables, a film that featured Sean Connery and Kevin Costner. Mamet won the Pulitzer prize in Drama for one of his best-known works, Glengary Glen Ross and in 1992, the play was adapted into a successful motion picture. The star-studded cast for the film version included Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, and Alan Arkin. Other Mamet film credits include The Edge, Hoffa, Wag the Dog, American Buffalo (also a play), and Vanya on 42nd Street.
