East-West is director Regis Wargnier's epic love story, set in the grim world of the post-war Stalinist Soviet Union. In the film, a Russian-born doctor returns after the war to find a Soviet Union that is more frightening and oppressive than he and his family had ever imagined. Sandrine Bonnaire, Catherine Deneuve, Oleg Menchikov and Sergei Bodrov, Jr. star in this Dr. Zhivago-like indictment of the totalitarian state.
Wargnier is chiefly known for 1992's Indochine, a film that garnered an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film as well as a Best Actress nomination for Deneuve.
