The third big buzz film to come from the 1999 Sundance Film Festival (The Blair Witch Project and Three Seasons being the other two) Happy, Texas wowed audiences, and first time director Mark Illsley found himself in the middle of a bidding war between Fox and Miramax. As it turns out, Miramax walked away with the rights to distribute the film, paying $2.5 million plus a share in first dollar profits.
In the film, Jeremy Northam and Steve Zahn play a pair of convicts who escape from a Texas chain gang. When the pair arrive in Happy, Texas in a stolen motor home filled with sequins and sewing machines, the community believes them to be a famous gay couple hired to put the "Little Miss Fresh Squeezed" beauty pageant back on the map. Zahn and Northam do their best to play the part handed to them and avoid a return to the chain gang.
