Dubbed an ugly duckling, particularly when compared to his former bride, Julia Roberts, Lyle Lovett has always seemed full of surprises (and not only on the marriage front).
The country singer/songwriter's strikingly funny looks are matched with an incredible singing voice that earned him the 1989 Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
Turns out that Lovett also has a penchant for acting and a rather charismatic screen presence.
In 1992, Lovett seemed to be an intriguingly off-beat casting choice in Robert Altman's lauded film The Player, which featured the country singer as the figure that haunts the movie producer played by Tim Robbins.
His looks matched with a quiet and direct voice, Lovett is always a bit startling which adds to his appeal.
Robert Altman seems to want to exploit this quality in Lovett for his films, as he also cast Lovett in Short Cuts (1993), Ready to Wear (1994), and Cookie's Fortune (1999).
In a fairly sizeable role in 1998's The Opposite of Sex, Lovett plays a police officer and suitor to Lisa Kudrow's uptight school teacher.
