If the popularity of J.R.R. Tolkien's novels is any indication, the planned Lord of the Rings trilogy has the potential to become one of Hollywood's most significant franchises. The first installment, Fellowship of the Ring, follows a young hobbit named Frodo as he journeys across Middle Earth.
Frodo possesses an enchanted-yet-evil ring, which he plans to cast into a volcanic fire. Accompanying Frodo is a hodge-podge of men, wizards, and elves, who must all help to keep the ring out of the hands of the sinister Lord Sauron. Writer-director Peter Jackson (Heavenly Creatures) will helm the picture. Casting includes newcomers and well-known actors, including Elijah Wood, Sir Ian McKellan, and Liv Tyler.
