Born in Kenya, the multi-talented Mike Figgis originally wanted to be a musician as he studied music in London. He then worked with a British comedy troupe, The People Show. After that he entered the filmmaking world, eventually writing and directing his first feature in 1988, Stormy Monday. His musical roots were evident in the film, as he also provided the score. It was, however, 1995's Leaving Las Vegas that put Figgis on the map as a writing and directing talent. That grim drama of two desperate people garnered Figgis Academy Award nominations for both Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film also earned Nicolas Cage an Oscar for Best Actor. Displaying once again his versatility, Figgis composed the score for that film as well. In 1999, Figgis outdid himself as this time he produced, directed, wrote and composed the score for Loss of Sexual Innocence. Figgis' even more ambitious in his next project, Time Code 2000. The psychological thriller about a woman who creates a new life and identity for herself after killing her abusive boyfriend years ago was shot in a single day without a script.
