The venerable Toronto native should be accustomed by now to awards for his conscientious body of work in films. Norman Jewison was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Director for Hurricane, the true story of boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter who was framed for murder and who was finally released in 1985 after almost two decades in prison. But without question Jewison's greatest honor came in 1999, as the recipient of the Irving G. Thalberg award from the Academy for his body of work in films. The young Jewison probably would have dreamt of receiving an award for a life's work in music, as he studied piano and music theory at the Royal Conservatory. His career took a detour into films when he began work as an actor and screenwriter in London. From there he proceeded to do directing work for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and then later for CBS. His first acclaimed work after he broke into feature film directing was 1965's The Cincinnati Kid, starring Steve McQueen. A couple of years later, Jewison's career reached its zenith with 1967's Oscar winner for Best Film In the Heat of the Night, the topical Rod Steiger-Sidney Poitier police drama set in the midst of the racial powderkeg that was the Deep South in the 60s. The film also marked the first of Jewison's three Oscar nominations for Best Director. He has been subsequently nominated for his work in two "lighter" fares, 1971's Fiddler on the Roof and 1987's Moonstruck.
