Based upon the true story of 1987's NFL player strike, The Replacements chronicles a band of misfits who lead the Washington Redskins, renamed Sentinels for the movie, to a string of inspiring victories. The comedy features Keanu Reeves as the starting quarterback and Gene Hackman as the head coach.
The film should be somewhat familiar territory for Hackman, who also played a coach in the 1986 high school basketball film, Hoosiers.
Director Howard Deutch made his directorial debut in 1986, with the John Hughes-written Pretty in Pink. Deutch's more recent credits include the Jack Lemmon-Walter Matthau sequels Grumpier Old Men and The Odd Couple II.
