Set during the reign of King Louis XIV of France, Vatel tells the story of a three-day feast at Versailles arranged by Vatel, France's first celebrity chef, whose famous culinary skills were called upon to help his boss, prince de Conde, ingratiate himself with Frances King Louis XIV. Vatel will open the Cannes Intl. Film Festival for 2000. The film stars Gerard Depardieu, Tim Roth, Julian Sands and Uma Thurman. Roland Joffe is set to direct. Screenwriting duties were handled by Tom Stoppard and Jeanne Labrune. Joffe is best known for his work on the The Killing Fields - which earned him an Academy Award nomination in 1984 and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography and Editing - and other films such as The Mission and City of Joy. Tom Stoppard's impressive resume of writing credits include The Russia House, Brazil, Empire of the Sun and Shakespeare in Love, which brought him an Oscar in 1999.
