German director Wolfgang Petersen began his career in the late 1960s, but helmed mostly made-for-TV fare through the early 1970s. Though most of Petersen's early work is unfamiliar to American audiences, his 1981 anti-war epic, Das Boot, earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director in 1983. Petersen followed that success with 1984's The NeverEnding Story, but directed his first true American film with 1985's Enemy Mine. Petersen's recent credits include 1993's In the Line of Fire, 1997's Air Force One, and 2000's Perfect Storm.
