Whit Stillman’s film trilogy of life and love among American socialites was a brilliant sign of things to come for the multi-talented director.
Stillman’s first installment of the trilogy was Metropolitan, an ironic glimpse into the posh world of New York debs and their well-to-do friends. The film landed high praise, commercial success an Academy Award nomination for best screenplay.
The success of Metropolitan earned Stillman a deal with Castlerock Pictures to develop two more features. Released in 1994, the romantic comedy/drama Barcelona follows the plight of two American cousins living in Barcelona. Acute and humorous, Barcelona examines the issue of American perception in a foreign country. While the story of life and love in cold war Spain is fictional, Stillman did draw from his past experience of living in Barcelona.
The third of Stillman’s movies was a semi-autobiographical film called The Last Days of Disco. The 1998 movie tells the story of two young women trying to find love at the end of the disco era. The Last Days of Disco is set against the decline of the disco movement and is loosely based on Stillman’s experiences in the Manhattan dance club scene.
A graduate of Harvard University, Stillman now resides in Paris and is currently working on a novel. There is word that Stillman’s next project is an adaptation of Anchee Min’s memoir, Red Azalea.
