The Hong Kong-born director was named, auspiciously enough, for his father's favorite actor, John Wayne. Wang made his pilgrimmage to California to study filmmaking at the California College of Arts and Sciences and thereafter returned home to Hong Kong. It wasn't until 1981's Chan is Missing, made on a preposterously slim $22,000 budget, that Wang was able to interpose his "smaller" films of personal statements between the big-budget Kung Fu flicks. In 1993, with the adaptation of Amy Tan's generational epic, The Joy Luck Club, Wang finally broadened his appeal to a mainstream audience. Wang branched further out to tackle themes not specific to the Chinese experience, with Smoke and Anywhere But Here.
