Two orphans, one the older sister and the other the younger brother, have grown apart through the passage of time. The sister has stayed behind in the small town in which they grew up while the brother has engaged in a rootless life of self-indulgence. The younger brother pays the older sister a visit and throws her well-ordered, well-mannered life into upheaval.
However different their present and future lives may be, what inextricably binds them is the past they shared, symbolized by the family home left to them by their parents.
The two siblings also surprise themselves as they begin to behave like the other. For instance, the older sister suddenly finds herself in an unseemly affair with her married boss while the younger brother finds all too comforting the notion of an ordered small town life.
You Can Count On Me tied for the Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Film at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo, and Matthew Broderick star in the movie written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan.
