Movies

Most of that is marketing and publicity. Movie news = publicity. Friends and word of mouth is through other people seeing the marketing.

And even if they have been anticipating a movie, they wouldn't necessarily know it was coming out without marketing.  (If, say, there was a Star Trek fan living in the US and not under a rock who didn't know there is a Star Trek movie coming out next month?  Bad marketing.)

Awareness and want to see are all about marketing - whether it's trailers, posters or the star of the movie promoting the movie on talk shows.  Have people seen the marketing? Do they like what they see in the marketing? Does the marketing make them want to see the movie?  Is the marketing encouraging them to talk about the movie to their friends? etc etc

never got the mtc info for last week {nm} notfabio Apr 16, 08:00

OBLVN flixster number (at RT) is just under 27k. {nm} second gary Apr 16, 08:08

The scourge of supposedly reliable tracking strikes again, RS having come in at mid-50s. Tracking. Fraking. Follies. :-) {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 08:10

Are u shadowking? U seem to know a lot about past trackings and movie comparisons {nm} karspov Apr 16, 08:20

No, I just have the one nym, not even a YTD version. I do think the whole tracking thing is all fraked up though. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 08:25

Not to get into a long conversation, its because this isn't technically tracking. Tracking doesn't predict box office, it measures marketing Moviesnob Apr 16, 08:30

Which ones only measure "marketing"? Don't they at least attempt to poll awareness, want to see, first choice, etc.? {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 08:43

That is measuring the marketing. {nm} RogerMore Apr 16, 08:46

And by extension, and see below -- they provide a NUMBER. This isn't rocket science. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 08:49

My non-insider understanding... RogerMore Apr 16, 09:11

Awareness, want to see, first choice, etc. are the key measures and can have little to do with marketing $ and the like. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 09:31

Not marketing $. Marketing. RogerMore Apr 16, 10:37

ALso, it's not people at the studios or theater chains giving us the $26M and $55M, it's the sources MTC and RS. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 09:50

MTC = "Major Movie Chain" RazorHawk Apr 16, 10:26

Studios know the MTC numbers. Your only nit is that MTC apparently does its own internal awareness, want to see, first choice, etc. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 11:23

And again, awareness, want to see, first choice is NOT marketing. It's polling and it's the polling that matters. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 11:28

How do most people become aware of a movie? How do they decide whether they want to see it? And whether it is their first choice? {nm} RogerMore Apr 16, 11:52

All kinds of reasons. Because they follow movie news, friends, word of mouth, they may have been anticipating a movie for years. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 11:58

Most of that is marketing and publicity. Movie news = publicity. Friends and word of mouth is through other people seeing the marketing. RogerMore Apr 16, 12:13

Marketing is one thing that affects awareness, want to see, etc., for good or bad. e.g. If want to see goes down after a bad trailer. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 12:03

If they were predicting solely based on ad dollars spent, no polling etc., then it's a scandal. But supposedly tracking tracks right? {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 08:51

Also, to say tracking doesn't predict B.O. misses that a B.O. number is given. "Those that have seen tracking... say..." {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 08:47

Tracking then is only a tool used to etimate the box office potential. If it was a prediction of box office, wouldn't all the sites have grammar Apr 16, 08:52

Giving a B.O. number ought to be more than any stupid guess when the studios are paying for it. This week they paid for $26M and $55M. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 09:00

Hah .. you never know what sparks long conversations. {nm} grammar Apr 16, 08:53

You've hit on a wishful solution, though. Since they suck at B.O. numbers, they should just rate marketing like reviews e.g. 1-5. {nm} KalElFan Apr 16, 08:55
