I saw the picture this afternoon. I did not walk out of the screening with my thoughts or feelings changed much about the country's people. There are more and more people on social media that fail to take audience's intelligence into account. I think it's stupid to hold Mr. Gilroy accountable for the west's education on Middle Eastern History and of the people of Lebanon.
If you like a twisty, geo-political thriller, Beirut totally works. Very good performances by both Hamm and Pike, and a plot that's very intelligently written.
To blast this film because it wasn't "written from a Lebanese POV", or it didn't have Lebanese actors, or wasn't filmed there, I guess there's simply no room for anything more than documentaries these days. The movie tells the story it tells. You could watch this film and not even wonder where it was shot, from a storytelling perspective. Gilroy sure knows how to write intriguing narratives. He's pretty much quality every time out.
