Not having at least one familiar char there is a huge risk..
But such risks are a gamble. Voyager series was a huge risk in itself, but managed to go well for the length of the series, even if imho they butchered the series in the final season with the last two episodes. However, there is quite a lot of storyline material within the ST universe to work off and make a certain movie from. It's a matter of taking a point within said universe, getting the right actors for it, and maybe having a cameo of someone from another ST movie/series within it.
