I found the following comment on Facebook - an eloquent and interesting one, relevant to the concept of zeitgeist etc.

(meaning it may have had more to do with the time and age, than his status as director):

"

I wonder if part of this is due to cultural issues. Not the swiss culture over the US culture, but the culture of the 70's vs the culture of today. I'm roughly the same age as the girl was in this case. And I don't think people at that time (or many people, anyway) got as upset about age issues and sex and sexual harassment was not taken seriously... See more in those days. I know I had a friend in Jr High who had a 25 yo boyfriend, and her mother didn't seem concerned. (he was a friend of her older brothers) The school knew also, and didn't call anyone. He lived across the street from the school, and their only concern was that she didn't go to his house during school hours.

At 14 my sister had a boyfriend that was 21 and while my family thought it was not the best idea in the world, they didn't think of her as a potential rape victim. At 16 I had a 23yo boyfriend who I moved in with and no one was terribly concerned about me being "damaged" from it. I remember our very cute softball coach (an adult..not sure his age, maybe in his early 20's) was constantly flirting with the players on my team (aged 12-14) and no one thought of it as salacious. He didn't change his demeanor when the parents were around. Cases of statutory rape were considered cases of vindictive parents, not cases of victimized children.

The casting coach was considered a given. Usually people would spread word of mouth who to avoid, but the worst that happened with the person was called a creep.

Fortunately we evolved as a society and recognize the harm those kinds of relationships pose. Now if my daughter had a 21yo boyfriend at 14 I would lose my mind and I would do everything in my power to prevent her at 16 to even have a 23yo boyfriend, let alone allow her to move in with him. But those were different days then. Doesn't mean that the actions were considered good, but I suspect it is possible that other peers of Polanski may have also done the same kinds of things in the 70's that they wouldn't do today, so are having a hard time throwing him to the wolves."

THR: Swiss authorities say they will not extradite [RPOLA]. Vashta Nerada Jul 12, 07:52

He's a free man, basically. It's all over almost any news service out there, making up at least 10% of items on my Facebook news-feed. {nm} Facto Jul 12, 07:53

So how much jail time has he spent when one adds in the 7 month in Switzerland? {nm} secretstalker Jul 12, 07:55

IDK, but feel quite sure the US won't come after him again. The California DA couldn't even be bothered to get the extradiction papers right Facto Jul 12, 08:09

42 days at Chino for a psychiatric evaluation. When the judge threatened more jail time and deportation. He deported himself. :) {nm} Vashta Nerada Jul 12, 08:12

Living in a luxurious villa in the Swiss Alps is not being in jail. Calling it jail isn't fooling anyone. {nm} mrbeankc Jul 12, 09:27

I call it restrictions on personal freedom. Don't stars usually get star treatment in prison anyway? Facto Jul 12, 09:39

It's called house arrest. Why would Swiss authorities lock him up in a cell on an extradition request they weren't even sure they would Vashta Nerada Jul 12, 09:43

Exactly. It was hardly jail as was being said it was {nm} mrbeankc Jul 12, 11:21

But in the event of any future sentencing, it would count. {nm} Facto Jul 12, 11:34

I doubt he will ever leave France again. Anybody want to buy a Swiss Chalet cheap? :) {nm} Vashta Nerada Jul 12, 08:14

Is that not a huge chalet? :-) I'm sure it'll be kept in the family, or if not, go for megabucks... {nm} Facto Jul 12, 08:22

Drugging and raping a child is wrong, unless you are a Hollywood director. {nm} Hooray360 Jul 12, 08:12

I found the following comment on Facebook - an eloquent and interesting one, relevant to the concept of zeitgeist etc. Facto Jul 12, 08:24

Fortunately, the world has outgrown the puritanical notion that drugging and ****-raping a 14 year old is somehow wrong. Hooray360 Jul 12, 08:31

So I guess you didn't read all the way through, then ;-) {nm} Facto Jul 12, 08:38

As I said, it isn't wrong unless you are a famous director. {nm} Hooray360 Jul 12, 08:46

I mean, c'mon, it wasnt even rape-rape... {nm} Whoopi Goldberg Jul 12, 08:54

That's not what you said. {nm} Facto Jul 12, 09:07

nice and eloquent--but totally irrelevant. only some of the issue is the age difference...he still DRUGGED and RAPED the woman.... burnyrhousedown Jul 12, 09:12

I certainly wouldn't mind much if he had served 2 years or 5 years back then, but I can't get myself worked up about it now. Reasons: Facto Jul 12, 09:33

There's a higher percentage of good people out there than you think. You MAY be steeped among scumbag class, but bigger factor is media play edzep Jul 12, 09:48

I never said anything about percentages :-) Facto Jul 12, 10:09

It was actually that way until about 10 years ago. It's been this decade that america's hysteria about age & sexuality has yesum Jul 12, 11:34

Why the hell does the nazis running this board censer words like s l u t? {nm} yesum Jul 12, 11:37

Polanski was released the same week as DESPICABLE ME. Surely not a coincidence. {nm} JMT Jul 12, 12:49
