As the only new wide release for the weekend, the feature adaptation of the 1980s TV series 21 Jump Street [21JST] brought in an estimated $35.0 million to easily top the weekend box office. The comedy attracted a broad audience that was 53% male and 50% under the age of 25.
After two weeks at the top, The Lorax [LORAX] dropped to second place with $22.8 million. The animated film has grown $158.4 million.
John Carter [OMARS] tumbled 55% in its second weekend to $13.5 million for third. The sci-fi epic has earned $53.2 million.
At the fourth spot, Project X [PROJX] added $4.0 million to bring its cumulative total to $48.1 million.
A Thousand Words [TWRDS] finished fifth with $3.8 million, off a respectable 39% from its opening weekend.
