Following The Avenger's all-time highest opening of $207.4 million last year, Iron Man 3 [IRNM3] banked an estimated $175.3 million to now rank second-best ever. The Marvel superhero sequel attracted a massive audience that was 61% male and 45% under the age of 25. The film benefited from the 3D surcharge paid by 45% of the moviegoers. Iron Man 3 also had a 10% higher turnout from families than The Avengers, which coupled with its CinemaScore of A could bode well for its long term prospects.
Pain & Gain [PAING] finished second with $7.6 million, down 62% from its number one debut. The action comedy has pumped $33.9 million.
In its fourth weekend of release, 42 [42] brought in another $6.2 million to bring its total to $78.3 million. At the fourth spot, Oblivion [OBLVN] earned $5.8 million to push its gross to $76.0 million.
