Despite The Heat in and out of the theaters, the animated Monsters University [MONS2] remained atop the weekend box office with $46.2 million. The Pixar prequel fell 44% from its debut, advancing its total to $171.0 million.
The Heat [THEAT] hit a scorching $40.0 million to win the battle of two new buddy action comedies. The opening is a career high for both Sandra Bullock [SBULL] and Melissa McCarthy [MMCCA]. The R-rated film brought out older women as the audience was 65% female and 67% aged 25 and over.
World War Z [WWARZ] finished in third place at $29.8 million. The zombie pandemic dropped 55% in its second weekend to bring its gross to $123.7 million.
Even with its stellar starpower, White House Down [WHDWN] took in just $25.7 million to debut at the fourth spot. The competition from other action films as well as Olympus Has Fallen from earlier this year proved too much.
Man of Steel [SUPR2] rounded out the top five with $20.8 million. The Superman reboot has leaped over $248.7 million.
