After a month of mostly serious dramas at the box office, moviegoers will finally have a comedy for some serious laughs. Johnny Knoxville [JKNOX] is back with Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa [JCKA4], but he’s going solo without his usual gang of misfits. 11 years ago, Jackass opened at $22.8 million and then Jackass: Number Two debuted with $29 million in 2006. The R-rated raunchy franchise reached its pinnacle in 2010 when Jackass 3D hit $50.4 million. Downsizing a bit, the fourth installment focuses just on Knoxville pulling pranks in his Bad Grandpa disguise. As seen in the trailers, the sequel plays more like Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat and Bruno, also from Paramount. The brand should still resonate with its target male fanbase. Launching in 3336 theaters, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa may land in first place with around $32 million.
Entering its fourth orbit, the 3D phenomenon Gravity [GRVTY] looks to draw in another $20 million and cross the $200 million milestone.
Despite the competition, Captain Phillips [CDUTY] has held strong as well as its namesake. The Tom Hanks starrer should be able to hold 65% again in its third weekend to $11 million.
Director Ridley Scott [RSCOT] has put together an all-star cast for the thriller The Counselor [CNSLR]. Despite its pedigree, the R-rated film about drug smuggling has generated little buzz. For an adult-targeted film that depends on reviews, Fox has surprisingly screened the film late for critics and embargoed reviews. Apparently, the movie is more arthouse than commercial for mass consumption. Playing in 3044 theaters, The Counselor may deposit $10 million.
The remake of Carrie [CARIE] failed to connect with today’s horror fans. Carrie is likely to tumble more than 60% in its second weekend to about $6 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
