Only one new wide release hit theaters this weekend, but it’s unlikely to challenge the comedy Ride Along [RDLON] for the top spot. Kevin Hart [KHART] cemented his starpower as a box office draw with a record-breaking opening for the month of January. Even with a second weekend drop of 50%, Ride Along should easily cruise to another victory at around $21 million.
As word of mouth spreads, Lone Survivor [LSURV] is adding theaters for its third weekend. The war drama could hit another $12.5 million. After a better than expected debut, The Nut Job [NUTJB] should hold 60% and crack $11.5 million.
Lionsgate opens I, Frankenstein [IFRNK], the latest sci-fi/fantasy mash-up from the makers of Underworld. Aaron Eckhart [AECKH] stars as the undead monster who must lead a battle against gargoyle demons. The PG-13 rating should help bring out young males, but not many other demographics. Resurrected in 2753 theaters, I, Frankenstein could walk away with $11 million.
Despite rebooting with a younger star, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit [JRYAN] did not connect with today's moviegoers. The film will have to depend on older adults to bring in another $8 million.
After 10 weeks of limited release, Nebraska [NEBRA] finally expands wide into 968 theaters. The multiple Oscar-nominated, black-and-white drama could pull in $2 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
