After having a weekend all to itself, Captain America: The Winter Soldier [CAPA2] faces a gallery of new adversaries. Despite its enthusiastic audience response, the superhero sequel is still likely front-loaded by fans. Thor: The Dark World dropped 57% in its second weekend. A similar decline would put Captain America: The Winter Solider at around $42 million, which should be enough to hold on to first place.
Fox Animation’s singing birds are going back to the jungle in Rio 2 [RIO2]. The first Rio opened to $39.2 million three years ago on the same weekend. Some of the children who watched the original may have already outgrown the G-rated sequel and young boys may show more interest in Captain America. Flying into 3948 theaters, Rio 2 could repeat a $39 million opening.
Relativity picked up the R-rated Oculus [OCULU] after the horror film built favorable buzz on the festival circuit. The marketing has effectively played up the chills to attract horror fans that have been starved for a scary movie since January. Showing in 2648 theaters, Oculus could reflect $14 million.
Summit targets football fans with Draft Day [DRAFT] starring Kevin Costner [KCOST] as the GM of the hapless Cleveland Browns. However, spring is the off-season and the real NFL draft is still a month away. The PG-13 sports drama will only appeal to much older males, who are more likely to pass than rush out opening weekend. Draft Day may sign up $11 million from 2781 locations.
After 2 weeks of limited release, The Raid 2 [RAID2] expands wide into 954 theaters. The original The Raid: Redemption earned $0.96 million in its 2012 wide expansion. The Raid 2 may loot $1.5 million.
