Two casts were better than the new one, but fell short the original one. X-Men: Days of Future Past [XMEN5] leads the Memorial Day weekend with an estimated $111.0 million over the 4-day holiday period. The third film X-Men: The Last Stand held on to the franchise record of $122 million. Director Bryan Singer's return to the series was well-received by both critics and fans.
Last weekend's winner Godzilla stumbled to second with $39.4 million to bring total to $156.8 million. The Friday to Sunday portion of the weekend was down 67% from its debut.
The family comedy Blended [BLEND] opened in third place at $18.2 million.
Neighbors [NEIBR] finished fourth overall with $17.2 million to up its sum to $116.9 million. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 [SPID5] rounded out the top five with $10.0 million to push its totall to $187.1 million.
Two limited releases entered moderate expansion. Chef [CHEF1] took ninth with $2.9 million while Belle [BELLE] was twelfth at $2.1 million.
