Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie were no match for a teen romance as The Fault in Our Stars [TFIOS] led the weekend box office with an estimated $48.2 million. The film dropped 52% on Saturday as Friday was frontloaded by the book's fans, who were 82% female and 79% under the age of 25.
Last week's top film Maleficent [MALEF] decayed 52% to $33.5 million. The fantasy has banked $127.4 million.
Edge of Tomorrow [AYNIK] opened in third place with $29.1 million. The sci-fi actioner brought out an audience that was 61% male and 73% over the age of 25.
X-Men: The Last Stand [XMEN5] finished fourth adding $14.7 million to bring its total to 189.1 million.
A Million Ways to Die in the West [MWTDW] rounded out the top five with $7.2 million. The comedy dropped 57% in its second weekend to advance its total to $30.1 million.
Expanding wide to 1298 theaters, Chef [CHEF1] served up $2.5 million to stay at the ninth spot.
