Thw battle between two sequels over Father's Day weekend resulted in an overwhelming victory for 22 Jump Street [21JS2] with an estimated $60.0 million. The opening topped the first film's $36.3 million and became the second highest ever for an R-rated comedy behind The Hangover Part II's $85.6 million. The audience was split 50-50 between males and females, with 56% under the age of 25.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 [HTYD2] debuted in second with $50.0 million, on the low end of industry expectations. The first film opened at $43.7 million. Despite being an animated film targeted at families, the sequel dropped 7% from Friday to Saturday. The crowd was 53% female and 56% under the age of 25.
Maleficient [MALEF] finished second with $19 million in its third outing. The fantasy has accumulated $163.5 million.
Edge of Tomorrow [AYNIK] decayed 44% in its second weekend to $16.2 million. The sci-fi film has scored $56.6 million.
Last weekend's top film The Fault in Our Stars [TFIOS] dropped 67% to $15.7 million and fifth place. The romane has teared up $81.7 million.
