Scarlett Johansson out-muscled Dwayne Johnson as her sci-fi heroine Lucy [LUCY] topped his mythical hero Hercules [HERCL] at the weekend box office with an estimated $44.0 million. The female lead attracted an audience that was split evenly between male and female, while 65% were age 25 or older. Word of mouth though is mixed as moviegoers expected a more action-oriented film.
Hercules finished second with $29.0 million. The crowd was 58% male and 64% over the age of 25.
After a 2-week reign, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes [APES2] dropped to third at $16.4 million. The sci-fi sequel has amassed $172.1 million.
The Purge: Anarchy [PURG2] finished fourth with $9.9 million, down 67% in its second weekend. Planes: Fire & Rescue [PLNE2] took fifth with $9.3 million, off 47% from last weekend.
And So It Goes [ASIGO] debuted in eighth place with $4.6 million, while A Most Wanted Man [AMWM] rounded out the top ten with $2.7 million from 361 theaters.
