After starting off Friday in second place but surging back on Saturday, the thriller Gone Girl [GONEG] finished the weekend atop the box office with an estimated $38.0 million. Based on a best-selling novel, the film attracted an audience that was 62% female and 75% over the age of 25.
Annabelle [ANABL] followed closely behind in second place with $37.2 million. The spin-off of THe Conjuring brought out a crowd that was 51% twomen and 54% under the age of 25.
Last weekend's top film, The Equalizer [EQLIZ] was third at $19.0 million, down 44% from its debut. The thriller has banked $64.5 million.
The Boxtrolls [BOXTR] slipped 28% in its second weekend to $12.4 million. The animated film has earned $32.5 million.
The Maze Runner [MAZER] scored another $12.0 million to advance its total to $73.9 million.
The faith-based remake Left Behind [LFTBH] debuted in sixth place with $6.9 million.
