Despite coming 10 years after the first film, The SpongeBob Movie 2: Sponge Out of Water [SPBO2] absorbed an esimated $56.0 million to beat all expectations. The sequel attracted teenager as well as adults with kids, as the audience was 50% over the age of 18.
American Sniper [AMSNP] dropped to second with $24.2 million. The war drama has recored $282.3 million.
Jupiter Ascending [JUPTR] debuted in third place with $19.0 million, far below its budget expectations. The sci-fi film drew a crowd that was 57% male and 82% over the age of 25.
Seventh Son [SPKAP] earned just $7.1 million to open at the fourth spot. The long-delayed fantasy skewed 61% male and 53% over the age of 30.
