Moviegoers turned out in record numbers to be turned on by the S&M sex-filled Fifty Shades of Grey [50SHD], which set a new President's Day weekend record with $94.4 million over 4-days. The romance also earned $36.7 million on Valentine’s Day to record the biggest single day ever in February. Women made up 68% of the audience while 5% were over the age of 25.
Kingsman: The Secret Service [TSSRV] debuted in second place with an estimated $42.0 million. The spy actioner also benefited from a surge on Valentine's Day Saturday for couples seeking gunplay rather than foreplay.
The Songebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water [SPBO2] sunk to third with $40.0 million to bring its total to $103.1 million. The 3-day portion of the weekend fell 45% from its opening weekend.
In fourth place, American Sniper shot up another $19.5 million to up its cumulative gross to $307.2 million.
Jupiter Ascending [JUPTR] finished fifth with $10.7 million over the 4-day weekend. The sci-fi film fell 49% when comparing the 3-day portion against its opening weekend.
