After securing the second biggest opening weekend of all times behind its predecessor, Avengers: Age of Ultron [AVNG2] will also likely claim the second biggest sophomore weekend ever. Two new wide releases will pose little competition. The word of mouth on the sequel is not as great as The Avengers, which slid 50% in its second weekend, but should be better than Iron Man 3’s 58% drop-off. Avengers: Age of Ultron will likely decline somewhere in between to around $90 million.
Warner Bros. targets women with the PG-13 action comedy Hot Pursuit [DMWTX] that pairs Reese Witherspoon [RWITH] and Sofia Vergara [SVERG]. Although reviews have not been kind, trailers and commercials have been funny enough to attract audiences looking for a laugh. Latino moviegoers should give the film a boost as well as Mother’s Day on Sunday. Booked into 3003 theaters, Hot Pursuit could tally up $21 million.
The romance The Age of Adaline [ADALN] could take home $4 million in its third weekend for the third spot.
Apparently buoyed by the success of Boyhood, IFC will open a film wide for the first time ever with The D Train [DTRAN]. The R-rated comedy stars Jack Black [JBLAC] and James Marsden [JMARS] as former high school classmates who reconnect ahead of their reunion. Arriving in 1009 theaters, The D Train could pull away with $2 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
