California has already been destroyed in make-believe numerous times, but that’s not gonna stop San Andreas [SANDR] from doing it again. Dwayne Johnson [TROCK] stars in the PG-13 rated disaster porn, but the real attraction is the special effects depicting an 10.0 earthquake from California’s biggest faultline. Warner Bros. knows a disaster film is sold by its money shots and the marketing campaign has shown destruction galore. Rolling into 3777 locations, San Andreas may shake up $38 million.
After leading the weakest Memorial Day weekend in more than 10 years, Tomorrowland [1952] will see whether it has legs at the box office. Word of mouth is not much better than critics' reviews. Tomorrowland may queue up another $16 million.
Pitch Perfect 2 [PTCP2] should continue to attract young moviegoers during the weekend and could add about $15 million.
Adults has made Mad Max: Fury Road [MMAX4] the top film during the weekdays, but will drop back down in ranking during the weekend to $13 million.
As with most horror films, Poltergeist [POLTR] is likely to drop more than 50% in its second weekend to around $11 million.
The weekend’s other new wide release is the PG-13 rated romantic comedy Aloha [ALOHA] from writer-director Cameron Crowe [CCROW]. Despite its all-star cast, Aloha rides in on a tidal wave of negative publicity that includes Sony executives trashing the delayed film in the hacked emails. The marketing campaign has been minimal and the poor reviews were embargoed until today. Washing up in 2815 theaters, Aloha may wipe out with $9 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
