Setting box office records on its way to the top, Straight Outta Compton [SOCMP] grossed an estimated $56.1 million to lead the weekend. The N.W.A. biopic easily surpassed the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line's $22.3 million and even topped the fcitional 8 Mile's $51 million. The film also set a new high for an R-rated opening in August. Surprisingly, the opening crowd had more females at 52% with 51% under the age of 30. 46% of the audience was African-American, while 23% were Caucasian, 21% Hispanic and 4% Asian.
After two weeks at the top, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation [MISS5] took second with $17 million to bring its total to $138.1 million.
The Man from UNCLE [UNCLE] debuted in third place with just $13.5 million. The 1960s set spy actioner didn't appeal to young moviegoers as the audience was 86% over the age of 25.
Fantastic Four [FANT4] tumbled 69% in its second weekend to $8.0 million.
The Gift [WERDO] finished fifth with $6.5 million, down 45% from its opening.
