Only one film is brave enough to open wide one week before the arrival of Star Wars, but at least In the Heart of the Sea [HRTSE] has the weekend unto itself. Chris Hemsworth [CHEMS] leads the cast of the whaling adventure directed by Ron Howard [RHOWA]. The $100 million production was originally scheduled to open in March, but mixed reviews on the PG-13 film gives an indication for the delay. Warner Bros. is likely to draw only older men. Sailing into 3103 theaters, In the Heart of the Sea should finish first at around $13 million.
After a three week reign, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 [HGAM4] looks to finish second with $9.5 million.
Creed [CREED] has become an awards contender and should rise back up to the third spot with $8 million, ahead of the fading The Good Dinosaur [DINOS] at $7.5 million.
The horror film Krampus [KRMPS] is likely to drop 55% in second weekend to $7 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
