None of the three new releases broke out as another weekend played out largely to expectations. The Girl on the Train [GRLOT] topped the box office with $24.7 million. The thriller received poor marks from critics and moviegoers alike. The audience skewed 70% female and 55% over the age of 35.
After one week at number one, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children [PRGRN] finished second with $15.0 million. The fantasy slipped 48% in its second weekend to bring its total to $51.1 million.
Deepwater Horizon [DPWTH] declined 42% to $11.8 million and the third spot. The disaster film has hit $38.5 million.
The Birth of a Nation [TBOAN] debuted in sixth place with $7.1 million. African-Americans made up 60% of the audience.
Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life [MIDSC] opened with $6.9 million for the seventh spot. The family film attracted a crowd that was 54% under the age of 18.
