Halloween weekend has typically been slow at the box office as Americans go trick-or-treating and partying. This year, the 31st falls on Monday, leaving plenty of time for older adults to check out this weekend’s sole new wide release, Inferno [NFERN]. Tom Hanks [THANK] returns for his third outing as symbiologist Robert Landon along with director Ron Howard [RHOWA]. The first two films, 2006’s The Da Vinci Code and 2009’s Angels & Demons, opened during the summer at $77.7 million and $46.2 million respectively. The seven year gap is likely to continue the downward trend. There’s also a lack of excitement shown in the trailers, even with the addition of Felicity Jones [FJONE] to the PG-13 rated thriller. Poor reviews may discourage the undecided moviegoers. Showing in 3576 theaters, Inferno could light up $28 million.
Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween [BOAMH] outperformed all expectations. Madea films typically drop 60% in its second weekend, but A Madea Halloween’s second weekend falls on its namesake holiday much like A Madea Christmas, which declined 47% in its second weekend. A decay around 50% would bring in $14 million.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back [RECH2] should be able to hold 50% of its debut for another $12 million.
Even though its second frame falls on Halloween weekend, Ouija: Origin of Evil [OUIJ2] is likely to lose horror fans to the festivities. Ouija could see its opening cut in half to around $7 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
