Universal reboots its mightiest monster King Kong with the 1970s set adventure Kong: Skull Island [SKULN]. Tom Hiddleston [THIDD] and Brie Larson [BLARS] lead the latest expedition, and unlike previous Kong films, the action remains on the island for the duration of the PG-13 rated film. Kong: Skull Island is set in the same cinematic universe as 2014’s Godzilla, which debuted at $93.2 million. There was a 16 years gap between the two American Godzilla films, and a 12 years gap since Peter Jackson’s King Kong opened at $50.1 million and totaled $218 million. With mostly positive reviews, Kong: Skull Island should be able to match its predecessor with $52 million from 3846 theaters.
Even though 2013’s The Wolverine tumbled 60% in its second weekend, Logan [WOLV3] has received the best reviews of any X-Men film. Logan may be able to hold nearly 50% for a sophomore session around $42 million.
Showing tremendous legs, Get Out [GETOU] is poised to cross the $100 million mark with about $18 million in its third weekend.
The faith-based The Shack [SHACK] scould hold 60% of its debut for another $9.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
