A bright March for box office gives way to a slightly gloomy first weekend of April. After vanquishing Beauty and the Beast, The Boss Baby [BOSSB] should not have much trouble with the little blue new competition. The Boss Baby should be able to hold 55% of its debut to retain the top spot with about $27.5 million.
At its current rate of decay, Beauty and the Beast [BTATB] looks to pull in around $24 million for its fourth weekend.
After two live-action hybrid films, Sony gone all animated with Smurfs: The Lost Village [SMRF3]. The Smurfs opened with $35.6 million in 2011 while the sequel only managed $17.5 million in 2013. Demi Lovato has replaced Katy Perry as Smurfette in the PG-rated film, which also introduces an all-female tribe led by a “Mama Smurf” voiced by Julia Roberts [JROBE]. Smurfing in 3610 theaters, Smurfs: The Lost Village could smurf $20 million.
Morgan Freeman [MFREE], Michael Caine [MCAIN] and Alan Arkin [ALARK] team up for the heist comedy Going in Style [GOINS]. The PG-13 rated release from Warner Bros. will likely only appeal to older adults, whom could be dissuaded by mixed reviews. Casing 3061 theaters, Going in Style could bank $8.5 million.
Pure Flix targets churchgoers with The Case for Christ [TCFCH] based on a memoir. The PG-rated drama could deliver $5 million from 1175 locations.
After average $6000 per theater in its moderate opening weekend, The Zookeeper’s Wife [ZKPWF] expands wide to 806 theaters. The WWII drama could draw $3.0 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
