With the major studios staying away on the last weekend before the start of the summer blockbuster season, The Fate of the Furious [FAST8] should easily out-distance the competition once again. The Fate of the Furious is slowing down at a similar pace as Fast & Furious 6, which would put its third weekend at around $20 million.
STX pairs up Tom Hanks [THANK] and Emma Watson [EMWAT] in the techno-thriller The Circle [CIRCL] about the loss of privacy in modern connected world. Unfortunately, the PG-13 rated film lacks buzz and reviews are trending negative. Rolling in 3163 theaters, The Circle could click through $12 million.
Eugenio Derbez [EDERB] toplines the PG-13 rated comedy How to Be a Latin Lover [HTBLL]. His Spanish-language Instructions Not Included shocked Hollywood in 2013 with a $7.8 million debut from just 348 theaters. Liongate-Pantelion targets his Hispanic fanbase though How to Be a Latin Lover is not as family friendly as Instructions Not Included. Prancing in 1118 theaters, How to Be a Latin Lover may seduce $6 million.
Amongst last weekend’s lackluster openers, Born in China [BCHNA] is likely to exhibit the best hold of around 75% for another $3.6 million.
Bleecker Street expands The Lost City of Z [LOCTZ] wide to 866 theaters in its third weekend. With great reviews, the jungle adventure could match the $2 million it earned last weekend.
BH Tilt targets urban markets with the R-rated thriller Sleight [SLEIG] about a street magician. Sleight could conjure up $1.5 million from 565 locations.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
