Showing an original film can still top the weekend box office, Dunkirk [DUNKR] delivered an estimated $50.5 million. The WWII film skewed 60% male and 79% over the age of 25. The older crowd and excellent reviews should provide for a long run.
Girls Trip [GIRLT] opened in second place with a better than expected $30.4 million. The R-rated comedy connected with its target audience that was 79% female and 59% African-Americans.
Spider-Man: Homecoming [SPID6] finished third with $22.0 million, bringing its total to $251.7 million.
Last week's top film, War for the Planet of the Apes [APES3] dropped to the fourth spot with $20.4 million. The sequel tumbled 64% in its second weekend to settle at $97.8 million after 10 days.
Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets [VALER] debuted with $17.0 million for fifth overall. The sci-fi film drew 63% male and 60% age 25 or older.
