A trio of new films reach shore during the post-Memorial weekend, but none will challenge Solo: A Star Wars Story [SWAR2] for the top spot. With poor buzz and mixed reviews, Solo is unlikely to have the legs of the Star Wars films that opened in December. Over the last 2 years after Memorial Day weekend, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and X-Men: Apocalypse both dropped 65%. Solo: A Star Wars Story will likely meet a similar fate and fall to $29.5 million.
Heading into its third weekend, Deadpool 2 [DEAD2] looks to gross another $20 million to cross the $250 million mark.
Shailene Woodley [SWOOD] and Sam Claflin [SCLAF] star in the survival drama Adrift [ADRFT] based on a true story. STX targets female moviegoers that opened Me Before You starring Claflin to $18.7 million on the same weekend two years ago. Landing in 3015 theaters, Adrift could wash up $13 million.
Johnny Knoxville [JKNOX] opens an amusement park with dangerous rides called Action Point [ACTNP]. His last Jackass film Bad Grandpa opened with $32.0 million in 2013. Paramount is hoping for similar success, but unfortunately, the R-rated comedy has not generate much buzz. Debuting in just 2032 theaters, Action Point may tally $10 million.
The R-rated sci-fi Upgrade [STEM] stars Logan Marshall-Green [LMARS] as a man implanted with a chip which then goes haywire. Blumhouse has a knack for connecting its film with its target audience. With positive reviews, Upgrade could download $4 million from 1457 theaters.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
